Go on a journey from self to self, my friend…
Such a journey transforms the earth into a mine of gold.

The above quote is from Rumi, a 13th century poet from what we today call Afghanistan. Today I went on Journey with my friend Dawn to a place that sells leftover food to low-income groups. We went there to seek some ripe produce that they were giving away free, but discovered all the produce in a certain area was free. Some of it was overripe and good only for the compost or worm depository piles at Dawn’s house, but some was just good food that can be used to eat now. Looking for waste we found a gold mine for the worms, for making compost and to feed persons at Dawn’s houses.

Getting a glimpse of all the wasted food each day in America made me more a believer in Growing Power, using waste to Grow Renewable Affordable Food (GRAF).

I told someone who was in a ‘funk’ today, not feeling well in mind, body, or spirit, that sometimes the best thing to do is to do something for someone else. The journey from self to self can transform our spirits.

My faith in some public officials is slowly being restored in part due to responses I got from Mayor’s staff and County Executive’s staff about the discrimination that Dawn has faced with her houses. Nothing has been done to correct the situation yet but at least they are interested enough to respond. Being ignored, as most poor, marginalized persons are, is much worse.

When you take life as a journey, as when you take waste for worms, the journey or garden transforms into a “mind of gold.”
