At the start of the new television series year I took the time to watch a few of the dramas we have watched for years. I always thought they were a little mindless and worthless but now I really feel upset after watching them. Once I start them I feel compelled to watch them but afterwards feel I have wasted my time.

I think I need to blame late night public television host Charlie Rose and Travis Smiley for this new revulsion. I find most of their interviews with persons in the art, political and entertainment world rich and informative. After watching these shows, which unfortunately are on late in the night, I feel good and refreshed, although I am tired.

This modern day discernment of spirits reminds me of the conversion of Inigo Lopez de Loyola in Spain in the 15th century. Inigo was a soldier, prideful seeking honors and riches. After being injured in a battle he had only had a book about saints and a bible to read. However, he did have his imagination and dreamt a lot of bout being famous in court, being with women and full of worldly glory.

After this daydream of pride, riches and glory he felt empty, like I do after the TV dramas. After reading from the bible and about the saints and imagining himself in similar situations he felt good and refreshed.

Inigo went on to be St. Ignatius of Loyola the founder of the Society of Jesus, champion of the poor and marginalized.

Today after cleaning out the worm condo and doing some work in the GP garden I also felt good and relaxed as I did after I did some writing about nonviolence on the computer and helped my African nephew put some pictures on his website: www.friendsacross.org In his words, “Friends Across, Inc. seeks to replace violence, illiteracy and social injustice with nonviolence, literacy, and other justice-related programs for the vulnerable and justice-deprived in Sierra Leone. We are a social justice organization committed to active nonviolence as a way of transforming society”

So here we have it again the discernment that the merger of nonviolence and growing power is my mission in life right now, that which makes me feel who I am.

My new domain name nonviolent worm is looking like a good fit.
