At church today we heard how with just a tiny mustard seed of faith we can do wondrous deeds.

Before working in the garden today I had my doubts about this saying. But after putting some coffee grounds on the worm depository and checking it out, I had a glimpse of understanding. The worms, the lowliest of creatures, were eating the waste of compost and turning it into the black gold of castings.

Now if that was not enough I noticed how the Kale, growing from a tiny seed, was flourishing. I had picked the kale repeatedly this summer and it keeps coming back. It will live through the winter and comeback again next falls.

Now there is just the tiniest of faith involved in these wonders, the little faith of the GP gardening that this will work, worms turning compost into rich social which plants like Kale will flourish.

Now if we can do this with a mustard seed of natural faith how much more can we do with a mustard seed of spiritual faith? We might actually be able to move the military training center for the unjust war in Iraq off the MU campus on Oct. 26th, the day we celebrate Franz Jaggerstater standing up to the military war machine of Germany. (see Milwaukee14Today.GordonZahn). Franz believed that participating in any way with an unjust war, like that in Iraq, was to cooperate with evil.

Now only if the Marquette Administration would have the faith of Franz Jagerstatter, no matter how much the financial gain to the university is, they would not allow the military to train and recruit men and women for an unjust war on campus.

If we are successful in removing the military from campus maybe we can turn the buildings the military occupied into an indoor/outdoor Growing Power garden. Instead of growing young men and women for the unjust war in Iraq, Marquette could train its students how to Grow Renewable Affordable Food.

The Jesuits who operate MU have a saying “Faith Doing Justice.” Now I know what they mean. Maybe we can give them a nudge forward by having a mustard seed of faith that can remove the military from this Christian complex.
