Today a graduate student at Marquette University from India interviewed me for two hours on my beliefs and attitudes on Justice and Peace. I have been interviewed before about issues of peace and justice but in this one I really felt comfortable. I think it is because the young man interviewing me was from India. There is a certainly comfort level that I found with persons raised in this culture that I do not find with others, even those of American descent.

In my wanderings during the interview I found myself always coming back to how the basic principles of justice and peace in my belief system are interwoven with my interest in Growing Power. Tomorrow some of us, in the DMZ garden coop will visit the Growing Power headquarters on Silver Spring. I feel like I should have told Will Allen, the founder of co-op, about the DMZ but really have not been able to talk with him for the last year and I think an email would have gone unnoticed. I doubt if we will get a chance to visit with him tomorrow since there is a group from London England who have traveled here to visit with Growing Power. However, I know he understands what we are doing and I know that Marna, Dawn and I will have the full experience of a tour with Will and learn more about Growing Power and how to apply it to Growing Renewable Affordable Food GRAF in our homes and our vacant lot at Dawn’s.

I was at Dawn’s today to take some pictures for a brochure about the adult living environment she has created for persons with disabilities. After taking the pictures of rooms in some of her houses we noticed that the large compost pile we had built in her yard last week had significantly shrunk. The worm depository that consists of already made compost was about the same size. We decided we needed to make another run next week for ripe fruits and vegetables and wood chips to build up the compost pile again. I have learned from previous tours of Growing Power that the shrinkage is about 4 to 1. In other words when the waste composts, you have about ¼ of what you started with.

I saw some new color schemes that Tegan Dowling of Emergency Digital has created on the new domain of the nonviolent worm. It is quite exciting to see how even visually we are trying to balance the colors of nonviolence and growing power (worm.)

Hopefully soon the new domain and the five-pane insulation turning the sunroom into a greenhouse will be finished. These two projects, like the DMZ garden are good examples of participating in something one of us could not do by ourselves. As the sign outside of Growing Power says: “Together We Are Growing Power.”
