Today at lunch over a delicious meal at the Amaranth Cafe, Marna, Dawn and I discussed our plans for the DMZ garden co-op. We had healthy food while talking about growing healthy food.

Tonight some friends and I gathered here to discuss an act of creative nonviolence for Oct. 26th at the School of Military Science at Marquette University. This is the day Blessed Franz Jägerstätter, a conscientious objector in World War II, will be made blessed in the Church. Good friends talking about a good guy.

These are the two aspect of my life; nonviolence and gardening (worm power) that seemed to be coming together. However, today was all talk. On the worm side talk is not enough. I need to get out of the talk or computer mode and into the garden and/or the sunroom. Tomorrow I will work via computer on the DMZ and the nonviolent action, but will try to spend some time working outside in the garden and on growing inside the Sunroom.

My garden, due to Kale and flowers and nice weather, still looks good but it needs work. I need to dump the buckets into an enriched compost pile for next year, put up some plants in the garden for the compost pile, plant and fertilize with castings seeds and plants in the GP box and more. It is not hard work and it is desirable work. It just seems like the talk and computer work seem to take precedence.

Today as I saw someone driving and talking on a cell phone I was reminded how much more talk there is in the world today. For someone like me, who talks too much, that might seem good, but it is not. Talking, be it in email, in person or by phone, about stuff — even good stuff like growing power — can actually take time away from reflection and action. Usually contemplation and action does not require much talk, be it in the garden or taking action against the support of an unjust war on a Catholic campus, but it does take time.

So, Bob, listen to the call of garden. It is a call for contemplation and action. Contemplation needs silence and action is best done without words. Certainly the worms and plants in the garden want you to hear the call of the garden.
