Grandson receiving 4-H
award for aerospace

Today I attended at the Rustic Inn on a lake in Clover, WI, a Shawano County 4-H Awards lunch. My grandson, 9, won a 4-H Junior Member Project Award for Aerospace. Now this event was a real mix of urban and rural, agriculture and science, horses and rockets. If you need any other proof that the world is coming together and getting smaller, urban and rural, nature and science, I really cannot help you.

At the lunch I was talking with my other grandson, 7, a clover bud 4-H member, too young to be a junior member, about using some of my son’s, his father’s, land for growing sweet corn next year. When we got back to their house I was a refereeing a one-on-one basketball game between the two boys.

The spirit of Milwaukee, where we everyone knows everyone and is related in some way or another, is taking over the world. Despite all the categorization and stigmatization of people, we are all coming closer together and the world is becoming smaller.

Tomorrow my DMZ partners and I are going shopping for waste — carbon and nitrogen for our urban compost pile. Tomorrow I will continue work on the new web domain, www.NonviolentWorm.org . Tomorrow my friend John will hopefully finish making all the five-pane windows in the sunroom. Tomorrow we will send the media in town a press release about our creative nonviolent action next Friday to close the School of military science at a local Catholic University, Marquette.

What is the thread holding all these diverse pieces together and making, like my friend Ella, an artistic patch quilt unifying these experiences?

A hint came today at Church as the readings spoke upon “unceasing prayer”, a persistent and consistent praying that pervades everything and, in the end, wins. Like the ‘pilgrim’ of old I must search for this connecting link of prayer that binds all together in a whole. Maybe I should consult with a small creature, like the worm, why this is becoming such a small world.
