‘Tis the Holiday Season and I do not want to be a grouch. Buying gifts, keeping up with everyone else, materialism do not really motivate me so that side of the Holiday Season leaves me in the cold. However, it is a time of winter dying and sparks of joy and that part I enjoy. So as the days become shorter, darker and colder, I look beyond the shortest day of the year to a new year full of promise and hope. It is the season to clean up literally, like in the office and sunroom, and figuratively like in some of my tired old ways. To make room for the new, just as in the garden, one needs to clean up the present and prepare.

‘Tis the Season of great spending and great yearning. A time we give and receive not according to our need but according to wealth. As usual the rich get richer and the poor get poorer but only the poor are blessed. The birds in the backyard wait in the tree for more gifts of seed. The children wait for Christmas for more gifts. We give and expect to receive. It that what the Holiday Season is all about?

‘Tis the Season for dying yet the season of birthing. Tomorrow we celebrate a day honoring Mary the mother of Jesus and the mother of God. How can that be, when only she said: “Let it be.” We do not know that any more than we know how the seeds planted in the ground bring new life and how by dying we rise again.

‘Tis the Season for mystery. Let us rejoice for in mystery there are no easy answers only the wellspring of joy.
