Today’s Grounds Haul

Today I went to the best coffee house for saving coffee grounds and discover a bonanza of grounds waiting for me. The persons working there said they would save the coffee grounds for me during the winter if I could use them and they are true to their word. Coffee grounds, even in winter, can be thrown on compost piles and worm depositories to melt with the snow in the pile and provide food and heat. When grounds (nitrogen) mix with wood chips or leaves (carbon) and some snow (water), they create heat and excellent compost. Now my yard is filled with bags of coffee grounds and buckets of wood chips, taken from the DMZ wood chip pile, and they are ready to be dumped on my present piles of compost.

I called Dawn, the D of the DMZ garden co-op, today to tell her of my treasure of coffee grounds and to share it with the DMZ piles at one of her houses. She answered her cell phone out of breath. I asked her why and said she had just run over to one of garages and the project house, one that volunteers are renovating, since there had been a break-in at both places. I said I would call her back and did not give her the good news of the grounds (or find out the bad news of the break-in). After all the hardship she and her houses for the disabled have suffered over the last year from the newspaper, County, and City’s discrimination, this break in at the project house, her one bright hope, is something she did not need or deserve.

Tonight at a friend’s funeral I met John, my young adult friend who helped me with the sunroom, coming up with the five-pane window inserts low-tech idea. His idea and work is saving me tons on heating bills. Inexpensive clear plastic can keep a house warm, and throw-away coffee grounds can enrich the soil. Warm Grounds are to be found everywhere.
