DiaryOfAWorm: Snow And Poverty

St. Francis in the Snow

“Poverty is to have nothing, to wish for nothing, yet to possess all things truly in the spirit of freedom.”

The Snow kept coming today. Over 20 inches this month and they say winter has not begun. When I was young this much snow would seem normal now it seems extraordinary. Same snow but different perception of its impact. Now some news broadcast contains three weather reports. All this snow, mixed with the coffee grounds leaves and wood chips in my compost and on my soil should make for a deep rich winter for growing next spring.

Also the giving kept coming today. Our church had at small toy and food giveaway. As I was driving one woman and child home from the toy giveaway she mentioned how crowded the big “Toy for Tots” program had been this year and how she could not stay in line long enough to receive anything. I also noticed the number of St. Vincent De Paul calls to persons in need for basic essentials like a bed or refrigerator have greatly increase. The news tells us how poverty is growing in USA and in our city. Experiences confirmed the same thing.

As snow and poverty build up, the poor get poorer and need more and the rich get richer and need less but get more. The consumerism of Christmas drowns out the meaning of Christmas. I pray that this Christmas season the spirit of Christmas comes and finds joy in fewer toys.
