Loren and John

Today at Christmas Dinner two of the guests were the two young adults most responsible for the Growing Power Home Model Garden. Loren built the growing power box in the sunroom, the worm condo outside, and insulated the floor of the sunroom. John is the creator and maker of the five pane window inserts that have been so effective in making the sunroom into a greenhouse. Although both had been instrumental in the home model garden, until today, Christmas, they had never met. They both are very appreciated young men in our lives

Another young man at dinner was Earnest, a friend from Chicago whose heart is still in New Orleans where he grew up. Although he was invited to dinner we did not know if he would be here until he just showed up this morning, just in time to go to Christmas liturgy with us. Also at the table today with my wife, son, and self, was Loren’s fiancée Stacy, and our dear friend from Sierra Leone Auntie Hawa. Everyone had brought some food and my wife made a wonderful roast. However, the star of the dinner was the salad. I had made what I call a Greek-Lebanese-Italian salad taking ingredients from each kind of salad and putting them together in the salad bowl. Eating Christmas dinner with such a diverse group of persons, made me think about my essay in an earlier diary entry called Salad Bowl Friends.

So the Light did come this Christmas. It came at the dinner table with family and friends of all ages, laughing and sharing good food and conversation. The light cut through some of the darkness some at the table felt today being far away from loved ones. We were together at table, a diverse group, some only meeting today. However, we were a healthy living group of salad bowl friends that gave nourishment and hope to each other.
