Keep the Faith

I do not like cold weather. Today it was cold but I liked it anyhow. Sometimes you can like something without liking the whole thing. Each day brings new challenges and new decisions on how to spend one’s time, be they cold, warm or hot choices. Choices of the day as well as past choices affect the whole day. However, like cold weather, there is something beyond our choices that makes or breaks our day. When things happen that are beyond our choices or control, we need faith or trust to survive and to believe that “All will be Well.”

Today I called a lady who had made a request for some furniture from St. Vincent De Paul. I was just calling for appointment for my wife and me to visit her. However, she had a need to talk about her life so I listened. She was a hard-working person who had gotten sick and could no longer work, and she was quickly losing her money, friends and possessions. Even getting food to survive was now a struggle. I could not offer her much, besides a promise of a bed and some furniture, but she wanted someone to listen to her compassionately. At the end of our long conversation she thanked me for listening to her and I thank her for sharing with me. Things were happening to her beyond her or my choices or control. The only thing we both had to share that meant something was faith and trust that things would get better. Her needs and poverty, just like the cold, was something I did not have control over, however I felt blessed to share in her distress and to have the life and things I have. I offered my prayers and worked the rest of the day for this woman.

Yesterday a friend of mine from Church who suffers severe dementia went missing. She was lost in the cold of last night. Today she was found in some small town outside of Milwaukee and returned to her warm home. When someone called me with the news that she was missing last night and when I saw the TV report all I could do was have faith and trust in her return.

Talking to a friend today about some personal situations my friend said that we need faith that all will work out well. My friend was not telling me not to try to work on improving a situation, but just saying that often, in the end, all we can do is to have faith. “Keep the Faith”.
