Jimmy the Goundhog in
Sun Prairie

I heard today that the Groundhog in Sun Prairie, WI predicted a quick spring while the one in Philadelphia predicted six more weeks of winter. Fortunately since my days of living in Madison, near Sun Prairie, I have always been a big believer in this groundhog, Jimmy. I understand Milwaukee had its own groundhog but he died. I am sure he would have agreed with the Jimmy in Sun Prairie. In the movie “Groundhog Day” Bill Murray keeps living the day over and over again until he gets it right. Having different groundhogs see their shadow or not see their shadow makes life easier. Instead of repeating the day, all we have to do is choose to believe the one we want to believe in to have a good day.

Today was going to be seed- and plant-ordering day, ordering seeds for the DMZ gardens and plants for the rain garden. Instead it turned into a wiki web day. Amidst other things I added my son’s draft “Skull” slideshow his site and updated the page about the nonviolent actions for Marquette to be faithful to the Gospel and no longer host Departments of Military Science. I also added something about this nonviolent action on the Milwaukee Renaissance web site.

Between this wiki stuff and doing some house chores John, my partner in the AIR project, and I did some brainstorming about this project and Growing Power and came up with an offer that we think that Will Allen of Growing Power cannot resist.

Doing this inside work for most of the day, I feel somewhat like the Groundhog in Philly who saw his shadow and ran back into his hole for six more weeks. But since I believe in the groundhog in Sun Prairie who, not seeing his shadow, predicted an early spring, I better get outside for a while tomorrow. Maybe I can ‘walk the talk’ of my New Year’s resolution and then a long walk tomorrow. After all today, I understand, is the Chinese New Year, the year of the rat, so unlike Bill Murray in the movie, there is no need for me to repeat today tomorrow.
