Original VA main building

Sunday, when I was a child, was a day of rest. No one who did not need to work on Sunday thought of working and all the stores were closed. We are far from these days as I am now older and many of us work or shop on Sunday. But not for me today. This Sunday was a day of rest. My work nowadays consists of working in the garden, inside and out, doing grocery shopping, working on issues like the military presence at Marquette, working on the nonviolentworm web site, and emailing. But not today. Today was started with a nice breakfast and then to Church. After Church and some socializing my wife and I made some St. Vincent De Paul calls to persons in need; we went to a science store, now open on Sundays, to get a birthday gift for our grandson; we went on a long walk around the grounds of the Veterans Center, watched Wisconsin basketball on TV, read the paper and watched Masterpiece Theater and a little of the Oscars tonight. I did nothing exciting but it was truly a day of rest with none of my regular work. Tomorrow I will go back to working on DMZ garden, writing, grocery shopping and more of the same old, same old.

The walk on the Veterans Center grounds brought back some memories of a few years ago when my friend Godsil and others fought to save the VA old building from developers, Today I saw that the old Church was being restored, signs of their success. The buildings on the old grounds are wonderful statements of the glory of our past and our treatment of veterans that perhaps now has come on hard times. This VA center was one of the first three commissioned by Abraham Lincoln near the end of the Civil War. There was a grand theater, beautiful church, library and other essentials of a community grounds in those days. I doubt there is a theater, chapel or even library in the present building that is nearby. Theater, chapel and library are symbols of what was essential in the days when Sunday was truly a day of rest. Sunday was a day to attend church, maybe read a good book and take in the theater as well as a taking a walk on the grounds. Many died in the civil war. Today with medicine many lives are saved but many return scarred in body, mind and soul.

Speaking of veterans I read a quote the other day about veterans and unjust wars. The person, who runs a Vet Place said: “It is important not to treat veterans the way you feel about the government. It’s clear that we might have bad wars, but you never have bad veterans.” How true that is. May we all rest in Peace every Sunday as the veterans in the VA cemetery now rest in peace for eternity?
