GP Salad Greens
In a Diary of the Worm posted on February 12, 2007 I wrote about Salad Bowl Friends. “The salad bowl is an endless network of friends who are united by the zest for life. While keeping their unique diversity, together they are Growing Power. Watch out world, here comes the nonviolent revolution of salad green friends!” Preparing a salad for our DMZ garden monthly gathering today, I was reminded of this entry. Dawn and Marna, the D & the M of DMZ have become good friends with each other over the last year or so of our association together with the DMZ Garden. I got to know Dawn from working on one of Dawn’s houses for disabled persons, and Marna from the prayer vigils and working together on the Mothers Against Gun Violence web page. Both were interested in the growing power stuff that I was enthused about and came together as salad bowl friends.
This salad bowl friend thing is really spreading. Last week friends from western Wisconsin came to town to meet Prasad, our guide for a pilgrimage to India next winter. They told me that their daughter and son-in-law had brought some friends to their home in a rural area near Gays Mills, WI. One of the friends was a college basketball star but now was very interested in organic farming. My friends told him about Will Allen, a former professional basketball player who is the founder of Growing Power. They just found out that the person they told about Growing Power had taken the recent weekend workshop at Growing Power. Dawn and Marna had taken this same workshop. They remembered this person as did Will, who I saw the other day when I went to Growing Power to purchase some coir. Will said that he sent this person back to the Twin Cities with lots of worms. The network of Salad Bowl friends keeps growing. Salad bowl friends are “united by the zest for life” and “Together they are Growing Power.”
