Kale in 07

Dear Harvey Taylor,
Two years ago you introduced me to Kale,
A wonderful plant, like spinach but better;
A plant that comes up year after year, and
Lives through the cold winter.
A plant so good that I even planted some in the GP Box in the Sunroom, the winter before this one.
Last year I heard that it flourishes every other year, so even though it was abundant I planted some more, just in case this was true.
Now I am working in the garden and noticed that the Spanish onions you gave me last year are coming back a long with the chives, mint and perennial flowers.
But there is no Kale.
Where did it go and will it come back?
Where did all the Kale go?

Harvey, you need to visit Venezuela,

San Juan Cultural Center

Where home grown music like you make, is everywhere.
We visited the San Juan Cultural Center in the barrio outside of Bariquisimeto
We were entertained with Afro-Venezuelan music and dance.
Although we had spent most of the day on the bus and were tired and hungry,
The music picked up our spirits and made us want to dance with joy.
Esa-Pekka Salonen, the 26-year-old world-renowned conductor comes from this same area.
Our guide remembered hearing him play when he was eleven.
Now he will be the new director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Music of hope and joy was to be seen and felt all over Venezuela.

I hear on the news there is a world hunger crisis.
Where did all the food go?
We all know there is enough food and know how to grow food for all in the world.
Food is like music.
It needs to be made and shared,
Not horded by the few and rich, while the poor go without.
In Venezuela all, from the bottom up, share the food and music.
This is your kind of place.

I hope to make one of your concerts soon.
I miss the earthy music and word poems you create.
But first and foremost I must ask
Where did all the Kale Go?
