Three Free Three Year Olds

Spring is finally here. Some leaves are starting to appear on the grape leave vines in the backyard. It is safe to plant the tomato plants; danger of frost, snow and cold is gone; flowers are blooming and the pole beans are sprouting. Our Faith In Recovery group at Blessed Trinity had an open meeting today about being a Caring Community for persons with mental illness, and minds were opened. The Milwaukee Brewers are on a winning streak. The DMZ community garden (pictures web page is being built. All these are signs of spring. Spring is late this year. Today is June 1st but being late is better than not being at all. So from the depths of winter rises the hope of spring that will flourish into the heat of summer only to fall again. As the cycle of the garden goes on so does the cycle of life.

Today, reflecting on the new life of spring, I realized how fortunate I am to have good friends nearby, my wife and son, Marna and Dawn of the DMZ, Ella of Patch Quilt fame, Tegan and Godsil of Milwaukee Renaissance and wiki presence. Dianne, Bob, Ann and so many more. To be blessed with friends and family is a real gift of spring since it springs hope and meaning in life.

Friday at the family shelter and today on a St. Vincent De Paul call I met some silly boys. I call them silly since they all recognized the silliness in me and we were quickly at play making funny noises and motions at each other. One boy today was three so I could do my “ I am free” routine with him. He did not get the difference between ‘free’ and ‘three’ which is good. One of the boys, about 18 months, at the family shelter, picked up right away on my international children’s silliness gesture of putting my hand to my head and gave me the sign back. Children between 1 and 3 live in an eternal spring and it does not take much to get them laughing and being silly. Parents take to my silliness with kids various ways. One of the young woman at the shelter really understood what was going on when her developmentally disabled child immediately took to the silliness and me. The less you know the more I think you can appreciate the silliness and the chaordic nature of the eternal spring. The cycle of spring returns and all is well.
