One rose has appeared in my garden. It has thorns. I would like more roses to appear but that will mean more thorns. But that is the cost that I need to pay for more roses. I have three possible rose bushes in the garden so with some care and attention I can have more roses and thorns. In general this is how I feel about my GP home model garden. I need to focus more on it and give it more attention and care. I have been busy helping others like Dawn and Marna in the DMZ but neglected my own garden. There should be more production from my space. I have all the right things, mounds, worm condo, tea, worm depository etc., but need to put it together better for more production. For example, at Growing Power they say if you do a worm condo right the worms will increase by 4X. My worms do okay but I do not have that kind of production. The same could be said for my crops. I am not making effective use of my growing space and materials. With growth in production in my garden will also come some thorns, but that is okay. Growing like life means roses with thorns.

Growing Power with its investment in the DMZ with time, materials and resource people makes this job, care of my own garden, easier. I dropped by there the other day with some coffee grounds only to find Growing Power staff there with compost materials (including some like brewers yeast that I cannot get), castings and enriched soil, helping Dawn and Marna in the garden. I can now use the time spent at DMZ on my own home model. Unless I take care of this model garden I will not be of much value to others as a model GP home garden.

One of my first tasks with this new zeal is to figure out the right mix of compost and water for the worm condo and making castings. I have already learned that mixing castings with coir makes a good fertilizer for plants. Coir, a sustainable substitute for peat moss, adds something to the enrichment of castings to the garden. In the next few days, with help or without help, I hope to extract more castings from my first worm condo, mix it with coir and fertilize my garden in back and rain garden in front. I believe this will mean more roses and of course more thorns.
