Worm Condo For Sale

Worm Condo For Sale
Nicolas and his brother came over today to see how the new condo they built is doing. The condo is a 3-foot cube box and can hold a cubic yard of compost. With good cooked compost this can produce about 2/3 to 3/4 of a cubic yard of ‘black gold’ or worm castings for making casting ‘tea’ or for fertilizing plants. With worm castings costing $20 for an 8 lb. Bag, this makes the value of the worm castings valued at hundreds of dollars. This is the box that I think every personal and community garden needs for increased production. Alex and his brother can produce these worm condos with new material for about $85. They can also be made with used material and different sizes. There will be a special site on the worm condos for sale soon on the with more details.

Green Beans Climbing

Green Beans Climbing

The green been vines are growing up the trellis of chicken wire built over a mound. The beans are doing the best of all the new plants I planted this year. The best plants are the perennials, Spanish onions, mint, chives, flowers, mystery herb and grape leaves on the fence. The other plants, except beans, are doing okay but seem to be growing slow this year. However, with fertilization of organic coir/compost mix and more “tea” they are starting to show more growth.

Mystery Herb

Mystery Herb

Including in the perennials is an herb that I purchased a few years ago but forgot what it is. I asked by web and in person if everyone knows what it is but so far no one has recognizes it. It is best when picked and dried in the dehydrator which is being kept busy these days with fruit and herbs.

Rain Garden

Rain Garden 07/01/08

The rain garden plants and the rain barrel diverting the water from the sewer into the rain garden are complete. The plants are alive and well but do not seem to be growing up. My guess is that they are taking root in the soil and will soon spring up. In the meanwhile I keep they well watered on days when there is no rain. I put some of the organic coir/casting fertilizer around each plant today and that should help.

Plants and Pots

The plants in pots along the fence and driveway are doing well. Each pot has compost and the coir/casting mix. If it rains there is water overflow from a rain barrel in the back of the garage that feeds them water on the bottom. But most of the time I just water the bottom metal tray that flows downhill when I water the plants from top.

There are many more pictures from today but if a picture is worth a thousand words this posting is already much too long.
