Waiting after Prayer Vigil

All summer I have been asking persons at Growing Power about purchasing some coir. I have received all kinds of answers from “we need to order some more”, “we have only enough for ourselves”, “we do not sell it”, “we have not ordered it”, to “I will ask the ‘big man’ (Will) if you can purchase some.” Finally, a friend of mine from Church, who is on the board of directors of Growing Power, said he would ask the questions at the next board meeting. The question takes on more importance as we move the GP home model into the sunroom and inside planting. Coir mixed with castings is important to growing inside using this method of growing power.

Waiting for an answer about coir, however, seems small compared to the waiting I witnessed after a prayer vigil yesterday for a young high school girl who was killed coming home from school. The prayer vigil leaders had started the vigil on time, but some of the friends and family members were waiting on another corner nearby or just arrived late. It was at the end of the brief prayer vigil, when finally everyone was there, that I witnessed the waiting. All the regulars at the prayer vigils for homicide victims left, but all the friends and family of this young girl just waited in silence. I waited with them and after a long wait, some starting talking to each and the group started to break up. Reflecting on the brief silent waiting and prayer for this girl made my waiting all summer for coir seem small.

Waiting is just part of living. Waiting always happens. What we make of it, waiting, be it for coir or for a prayer vigil to end, is what counts
