Friends appear everywhere and at all times. Tonight when I was out with my wife checking on used cars to replace one a friend helped us find twelve years ago, a friend from India called. When I got home there was message from another friend about tickets for a basketball game. For most of my life I knew a lot of persons but felt I had very few good friends. Now that I am ‘retired’ from working at a job, I still know a lot of people, but now feel I have many good friends.

Friends are persons who care about each other’s health and that of their families. Friends are persons who will listen when one needs to talk and visit when one is sick. Friends have time for each other, even when they are busy. Friends are not acquaintances. Friends can be family members or not related in any way.

One of my early postings on the Diary of the Worm was about my salad bowl friends. I have more and some different “salad bowl friends” now than in 2007, but the same qualities of friendship exist with my present friends. I described in this way: “The salad bowl is an endless network of friends who are united by the zest for life. While keeping their unique diversity, together they are Growing Power. Watch out world, here comes the nonviolent revolution of salad green friends!”

Friends are a blessing and gift which we all need to grow with a zest for life. Thank God for zesty salad bowl friends.
