Dorothy Day Resisting

Remember that email that disappeared last night! Well I rewrote it again today and send it to the person with the Catholic Worker mailing list. However he sent it back saying it had to be in ‘plain text’ not ‘rich text’. That change was easy to do and hopefully he can now send it out.

As a Catholic Worker at the local house of hospitality once told me: “Some Catholic Workers are not Catholics and some do not work.” (a job for money) So in that spirit, I am sending this Open Letter to Catholic Workers out to all, whoever that may be, of you who may not be Catholic Workers but might find the letter interesting. It is rich text so you can just click on web sites mentioned.

Dear Catholic Workers,

Thank all of you that responded to What is the story behind Dorothy Day accepting the Laetare Medal from Notre Dame? . Thanks to you and the Notre Dame archivist I was able to complete the story. You will find the last four paragraphs added or modified.

As most of you know Dorothy Day strongly resisted military training (ROTC) on Catholic campuses. (See Catholic Workers and Military Training on Catholic Campuses

Her refusal to accept honorary degrees from Catholic Universities with ROTC is what made the story of Laetare medal so interesting.

Thanks to Dorothy and many others there are now only 21 Catholic Universities in the USA with some form of ROTC on campus. (Notre Dame and Marquette University are the only two with all three base military schools on campus.)

Don Timmerman, Joe Rad, myself and others are trying to carry on the tradition of Catholic Worker resistance to ROTC on campus here in Milwaukee.

Below is a list of the 21 Catholic colleges and universities with ROTC programs on campus. (Also see: List of Catholic Universities with base schools of Army.

In almost all, if not all, the locations of Schools of Army on Catholic campuses there is a Catholic Worker House of Hospitality. If you are not already doing it, we ask you to join us in resisting the military in Catholic schools. You can find more information at Teach War No More. or by contacting us personally or at . Working together we can reduce again the number of military training schools on university campuses. At least we will be acting on our Catholic Worker conscience. Perhaps we could coordinate our efforts somehow. Keep in touch.
