In the unrest in Baltimore gang members came together and spoke about the roots of the social outrage, dismissal of concerns of blacks, harassment and blaming them, the poverty and neglect of their neighborhood all over the USA, treatment of blacks by police. The Governor of Maryland blamed “outside agitators” for violence; President of USA says the violence is caused by “thugs”, a minister says she was speaking for God; the major media exploited the situation with moment by moment coverage.

The news that America is U.S. Is ‘World Leader’ in Child Poverty is mildly interest to a few. Milwaukee being the most segregated city in USA and second in poverty and in North Central Milwaukee having the highest incarceration of young black adults makes for a lot of good talks but not for much action.

Black and Brown lives do matter as the Students at Marquette declared yesterday in march and rally but it is only act of civil disobedience that gets some media attention.

Dontre Hamilton, an unnamed black man is beat and shot by a white police officer in a county park and without a video (there were cameras on the park by DA said they were not significant and would not release them) is ignored by national media. Video of police arresting African American men and killing them gets national attention. Nonviolent protest in response gets a little attention but acts of anger and violence gets major coverage. What are we saying to young men mistreated by police?

In our faith sharing group this morning we focused on the scripture passage “The stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone.” The gangs of Baltimore, united for this cause, are the rejected ones but are speaking more of the truth of what is happening across our country. The Holy Father is speaking what many in USA do not want to hear about capitalism and thus ignored or rejected. The Coalition for Justice built after the death of Dontre Hamilton continues to act and speak for justice even in face of rejection. The four students at Marquette who sat down in the middle of the main street of Milwaukee for justice for black and brown students and people of Milwaukee, suffered the act of many who commit civil disobedience, that is rejected by arrest.

The poor, homeless and marginalized children, teens and adults go voiceless and are rejects of society. Yes I will go with the rejected stones.
