All the items below were made in Rural India by artisans living the message of nonviolence and sustainability articulated by Mahatma Gandhi. They come with a story and with an invitation to learn more about this life style of nonviolence and sustainability. We discovered these products during the Pilgrimage of Peace to India last winter. This summer Sri Prasad Gollanapalli, General Secretary of Andhra Pradesh Sarvodaya Mandal in India and his wife Dr. Kranthi visited Milwaukee and brought samples of these products. Sri Prasad is also the coordinator of “The Wheel — Center of Gandhian Thought and Action for the National Council of Rural Institutes” (NCRI). This is part of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. Availability of these products in local markets is listed. Anyone interested in facilitating the marketing of the products in Milwaukee, Madison or Chicago area is encouraged to contact us at (Pictures, descriptions and more products will follow)

Khadi

Khadi is Indian handspun and hand-woven cloth. The raw materials may be cotton, silk, or wool, which are spun into threads on a spinning wheel called a charkha. It is a versatile fabric, cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Khadi commands a sentimental value for Indians. It is often associated with Mahatma Gandhi. Someone said, the first true Indian designer was Mahatma because of his appeal to Indians to wear khadi garments. That appeal was necessitated because of the need of creating self reliance and proving unity of India to English. Khadi also symbolized the need and importance of indigenous manufactured goods. Khadi represented India’s resistance and revolution. Khadi was also the face of Indian identity.
