DiaryOfAWorm: TMI on Worm Condos

Montezon Brothers Worm Condo

I have been accused of giving “too much information” (TMI) many times. Perhaps this is another example. On this posting I have tried to put together a number of posting on the www.nonviolentworm.org on the subject of Worm Condos. Here it is:

Worm Condos are part of the How to in the Growing Renewable Affordable Food G.R.A.F. They are a major competent of the system.

Something New!
This is from an email about building a worm condo or box by Alex Montezon to persons in New Orleans.

“The box my brother and I constructed was roughly 3 foot cubed, and cost about $45 in materials, but it is not the only way to do it. There are many plans available online that are just as good (here’s a good one: http://www.edork.com/WormBox/default.asp ). It really just depends where you want to keep the box, and how much you are going to feed it. You can use any number of recycled materials as well, including old wooden crates, toilet bowls, dressers, etc. You could take an old empty dresser, put it on its side propped up on 2×4′s, (or cinder blocks, or scraps of wood) and cut slits in the bottom for drainage, and then get some sort of plastic container to slide underneath to collect the tea. Basically, the idea is to get a box to contain compost/worms, holes to allow drainage, and legs to prop it up to allow space for a container for tea to drop into. The cheapest most environmentally friendly way simply involves junk furniture and a circular saw to plunge cut slits in the bottom. If you would still like the plans of the box made of 2×4′s and plywood which my brother and I created, I can type those up for you, and try to find some pictures to include for visual assistance. Hope this has helped, let me know if there are any other questions for me.”

The Diary of the Worm will resume August 16, 2008. I am taking some of the worms and going fishing.
